Ticket stub, METALLICA @ Grugahalle, Essen, Germany, January 25th 1987.

metIMG_6865IMG_6869This ticket is framed and the photos show some reflection and are, all in all, somewhat poor. Sorry about that.

Metallica was always one of my absolute favourite bands of all time. However, I am too young to have actually seen them live in the golden era between 1982-1990. Even more golden, if possible, was the specific timeframe between 1983 and 1986, when Cliff Burton was still alive and the classic line-up of Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett and Cliff Burton drove the Metallica machinery from support appearances to headlining festivals and huge arenas just a few years later.

Cliff Burton's memorial in Ljungby, Sweden

Cliff Burton died in a fatal bus accident in Sweden on September 27th, 1986, while the band was on tour. The tour was called the ‘Damage Inc Tour’, named after the last song on their newly released album ‘Master of Puppets’. The album is today often referred to as the go-to album for anyone wanting to know what Metal music is all about. It’s both Metallica and thrashmetals finest moment. Check it out if you haven’t heard it to pieces alredy 🙂

This ticket stub is from that tour, and it’s a pretty cool stub too. While American concert goers were handed a boring Ticketmaster-printout when they bough their gig tickets, German audiences got these really cool lokking tickets in their hand. Graphic display of the album cover. Cool stuff!

Show info: The ticket is for the Essen, Germany show on January 25th, 1986. It was less than 4 months since Cliff Burtons death, and already Metallica had played 38 gigs on 3 continents since his death. Burton was replaced by ‘Flotsam and Jetsam’-member and long time Metallica fan Jason Newsted.

Ticket info: Like most tickets from promotoers ‘Shooter & Klein’ the ticket stub is magnificent in all it’s colors and motive from the ‘Master of Puppets’ album. It measures approx 12 x 7 centimeters, or 5 x 2.5 inches. It’s printed on solid thick paper and is in incredibly good shape when you consider that it has been living thru a packed Metallica concert. I bought the ticket from the concert goer himself.

What is it worth?: To me it’s worth a million LOL, but at an auction I think it would bring something like 100 USD. At the end of the day, it’s all a matter of what it means to the buyer.

The band: (ref. Wikipedia) Metallica is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California, whose releases include fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship that placed them as one of the founding “big four” of thrash metal alongside Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. They formed in 1981 when James Hetfield responded to an advertisement that drummer Lars Ulrich had posted in a local newspaper. As of 2003, the line-up features long-time lead guitarist Kirk Hammett (who joined the band in 1983) and bassist Robert Trujillo (a member since 2003) alongside Hetfield and Ulrich. Previous members of the band are lead guitarist Dave Mustaine (who went on to found the band Megadeth), and bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted. The band also had a long collaboration with producer Bob Rock, who produced all of its albums from 1990 to 2003 and served as a temporary bassist between the departure of Newsted and the hiring of Trujillo.

The band earned a growing fan-base in the underground music community and critical acclaim with its first four albums, with their third, Master of Puppets (1986), described as one of the most influential and “heavy” thrash metal albums.

  1. Hey! Why don’t you check my hardcore version for Enter Sandman!? Here it is: http://onecutemanband.wordpress.com/2013/01/26/enter-sandman-metallica-hardcore-version/

    Cheers!

  2. Checked out your version mate, LOL!! You may have something going here!! The original is still better, in my mind, although I was never a huge fan of the ‘Black Album’. It was not Metallica anymore, They’d lost their speed from early days, and lost the prog touch from ‘and Justice for all’. ….but thats just me. They made great combacks in the 2000s though.
