This clip of Metallica from the Soviet Union in 1991 is one of my absolute favourites of all time, and whenever I feel like looking back at some great moments from my teens, this is one of the first I take from my Youtube shortlist. I was not there (of course) but just seeing this clip made a lasting impression back then.
The ‘Monsters of Rock’ concept was started way back in 1980, and the first bands to perform in this series were: Rainbow, Scorpions, April Wine, Judas Priest, Saxon, Riot and Touch.
Not a bad line-up! Back then the ‘Monsters of Rock’ was held at Donington Park in Leicestershire, England, which nowadays is used for the massive Download Festival.
Fast-forwarding to 1991. The Soviet Union was about to fall. The Warsaw pact had been disestablished in July, and by September the Monsters of Rock European tour came to Moscow for the first time! What a massive happening for the metal-starved russian youth.
With names like METALLICA, AC/DC and PANTERA on the bill, there was never any doubt that this would be an insane and epic day in the lives of both the bands and the concert goers!
It is also said that this was the biggest crowd Metallica ever played in front of. Do you know if that is true? Please let me know!

Take a look at the clip and feel the energy in the stadium!!
